  • Trick or Treat!

If you are anything like me, you have waited till the last minute to figure out what to be for Halloween. I am currently bouncing back and forth between one of the Kardashian sisters (probably Kourtney), a "Pan Am" stewardess, or a flapper. You can see the major trouble I am in, since I have picked some ahh-mazing choices. But it is not just about the costume, you also have tons of other things to consider: Shoes? Where am I going so I won’t kill my feet? Accessories? Are more better? And one that I always have the most trouble with...make-up!

Halloween is a night where you can really take a risk and try something you wouldn’t normally do! Therefore make-up research is something that is very important to enhance your perfect Halloween costume. My hairdresser told me about this Youtube channel by a girl named Kandee Johnson. I have to tell you, she is the definition of fabulous. She teaches step by step instructions on how to achieve the perfect winged eyeliner (which actually works!!), as well as specific looks like Barbie and Marilyn Monroe. The second I watched the Marilyn Monroe one, my first thought was to blog about it!! It is just too good:

Well, whatever you decide to be for Halloween this year, just remember to have FUN! And check out Unique Vintage’s awesome selection of costumes to go along with the fab make-up for a look that will put you on the best-dressed list of any spooky party!

  • Own the Night: Inspiration for Remaining Chic While You Sleep

Although Marilyn Monroe famously claimed she wore nothing but her Chanel No. 5 to bed, pictorial evidence proves otherwise. In fact, the hourglass silhouette of all classic film stars remains a point of inspiration for fans of vintage clothing. And just because you're going to sleep doesn't mean you can forget about one of the mainstays of vintage: attention to detail. Chic women everywhere don't turn off their sense of style just because they're turning off the lights.  If anything, it is just another opportunity to turn up the glamour.
The classic boudoir wardrobe would be incomplete without a silk kimono robe, which can easily be found at most vintage stores. This piece provides a wonderful topper to a full-length (but still sexy!) nightgown. Take your inspiration from this Carine Gilson Gabrielle option, with its short hem, bright colors, a wide belt and bell sleeves. No glamour girl would ever be caught without a pair of adorable slippers with a hint of fluff, be they with a short heel or flat like this pair from Debenhams. A soft silk eye mask like this Otis Batterbee peacock one, with its fun print, and a puff of powder in a time-tested scent like Angel by Thierry Mugler will finish off everything you need to feel just like Marilyn, Marlene or Rita for a few hours of much-needed beauty sleep.

  • All About (Hallows) Eve

Here at Unique Vintage, we believe that Halloween should be a time for turning up the volume on your diva-meter. The lipstick should be deeper; the heels should be higher.  (And that’s just the gay men!) Halloween shouldn’t be about flaunting it because you’ve got it, but rather about channeling your inner icon. Here are a few options we think may be the cure for the common costume.

    Diana Ross

The original diva supreme, Miss Diana Ross is the perfect solution to what could possibly be a dull costume. With a 1960’s up-do and a fabulous sequined dress, this is the perfect costume for anyone scratching for their inner-goddess. With a subtle cat-eye and deep lipstick, all you need is a pair of opera length gloves and you are ready for any event.  Grab two girlfriends, or a willing gay couple, and complete the look with the perfect accessory; the other two Supremes.

Diane Keaton a la Annie Hall

Women in menswear in womenswear is the ultimate switcheroo. Having revolutionized the 70’s with this gender bending look, Annie Hall is the perfect costume for fashion forwards fashionista of today. Complete the look with a tweed vest, a men’s floppy hat, and a tie. A pair of oxfords and cuffed narrow slacks top off the look to create the ideal Ms. Hall. Changing the rules a little bit never looked so good.

     Elizabeth Taylor

The late Liz Taylor knew how to work two things: a fabulous set of cat eyes and her own confidence. Any girl can put on a slutty nurse costume, but it takes a real woman to pull off classic Miss Liz. Channel your inner Cleopatra with the perfect Cat-Eye, a white Grecian dress and throw in a crown for good measure, and you too will have half of the civilized world fighting over you.

     Coco Chanel

In what could be considered the precursor to Annie Hall, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel got her start demanding that the confines put on women be stripped, and took her inspiration from the menswear of the times. From her timeless jersey knit dreses, to her classic 50’s Chanel suit, you too can splash on the No. 5 and take on this fashion powerhouse.  Complete the look with her pearls and earrings to ensure you are always thought of as a classic, timeless beauty.

     Grace Kelly

The princess of Monaco has always been a permanent style reference here at Unique Vintage. From her effortless style to her Hermes inspired “Kelly” bag, Princess Grace will always be a fabulous go-to option. Complete the look with a fabulous 50’s full skirted gown, deep red lips and a stunning pair of heels. The hair, of course, is the most important component of this look. Miss Kelly’s famous golden locks are what put her permanently on the fashion map.

    Jacqueline Kennedy

The 1960’s were defined by the Camelot-era Kennedy White House years. Mrs. Kennedy not only turned heads as the first lady, but finally brought the 60’s into a new era of fashion. Completed with lady-like gloves, pill box hats and Chanel suits, Jackie was able to turn something political into something fabulous. Channel your inner Jackie, whether it's formal or causal, make sure to complete the look with large black sunglasses and a head scarf.

The material girl is nothing short of a style icon. From her 1980’s pop princess looks to her classic Gautier bra, Madonna is the icon to put all other icons to shame. Having changed her identity over 20 times in the past 25 years, Madonna has managed to stand the test of time via re-invention. Whether you choose to pay homage to the Queen in her earlier days or her modern persona, Madonna has a closet full of iconic looks for you to choose from.

  • What to Get the Girl Whose Got it All

Do you have a friend who seems to have absolutely everything, so when their birthday approaches, you have absolutely no clue what to get them? And do they make it even worse when you ask them what they want and they say, “I don’t know? I’m sure you will figure out something!” UGH. Don’t you just hate that girl? Well, unfortunately, I have been told I am that girl However, I have figured out the solution to this agonizing gift giving process. Start collecting something! I began collecting books, fashion coffee table books to be exact. I LOVE fashion and they are always coming out with new ones, so I figured this is a fool-proof gift that I will actually enjoy! My coffee table is going to be quite crowded once I add these beauties to my collection:

    Hint, hint, wink, wink!

  • Miss October Unique Vintage Pinup Girl

    Name: Patricia Rodriguez Tillman

    From: San Salvador, El Salvador

Bio: Not long after I was born, El Salvador-the beautiful tropical paradise that I called home-erupted into a civil war. My parents no longer felt safe in our own home so at the age of 3, my parents packed up what we could carry and flew my two sisters and I to live with relatives in Montreal, Canada for a better life. A couple of years later, my parents decided to move to Toronto, Canada where I grew up for most of my life. While living in Toronto, I would dream, as so many other young girls do, of moving to Southern California and one day becoming a famous actress or model. As a result, I enrolled with talent agencies and was an extra in a couple of movies and shows in the 90's, but I never got my big break into showbiz.

While on spring break in Virginia Beach, VA with my best friend, I ran into and fell in love with a sailor in the US Navy and my future husband-to-be. Soon after we met, he deployed for six months, so we stayed in contact through letters, phone calls and emails. Soon after his return, he asked me to marry him and I said "yes".  A little over a year later we were married and due to the military lifestyle, we have called many places home such as Florida, Virginia Beach, Guam and now sunny Southern Caliifornia where I have dreamt of living since I was a little girl.

For our 11th anniversary this past year, I wanted to do something special for my husband: Being that we are both fans of the 20's swing era and pin-up art, I decided to pay tribute to him and the sacrifices he makes in the US Navy by becoming his very own USO pin-up girl to boost his morale when he is away on long deployments.

Ambitions: I always aspired to be a model or an actress, but because I wasn't tall enough or stick thin, I realistically didn't think I could do it.  Ambitions and goals changed in life, and currently I am a Navy wife and a mother to two beautiful little girls. My ambitions now are to raise my little girls with love and adoration and to provide for them and help them follow and achieve their dreams and aspirations in life.

As far as my own ambitions, I have once again decided to pursue a modeling career, but this time I decided to take matters into my own hands and find a photographer. When the search began, I wasn't looking for just any photographer, I wanted one that specialized in classic pin-up art forms, because if I was going to model again, this time I wanted to do it my way. To me, and most men will agree, stick figured looking models aren't classy. The pin-up models of the 1940's were real woman with curves and they knew how to be sexy without showing it all. They also knew how to embrace their beauty inward and out. They are definitely an example of what a true woman should be!

Favorite Vintage Accessory: I would definitley have to say my white rose.  I absolutely love it, it makes every outfit a little more special, and it makes me feel pretty :)

Favorite Pinup Icon: Betty Grable.. She had both beauty and talent!
