If you’ve been near any movie theatre lately, you might have noticed the influx of fringe, flapper hats and bobs. The roaring ’20s is not only making a comeback in the fashion world (as seen this past September in the spring 2012 fashion shows of Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch and Gucci), it’s dancing its way onto the silver screen this season as well. Martin Scorsese’s first kid’s film “Hugo” and the highly-touted “The Artist” both take place during this dapper decade.

Why is this fashionable era of the past becoming hip again? Sandy Powell, the costumer director for “Hugo” cites the popularity of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” which is set in 1920. “It’s been pretty influential,” she says. “It’s funny how these things turn around and suddenly a certain look becomes fashionable and it’s in every film. It’s bizarre. It’s the zeitgeist.”

As for retro fashions, the flapper look is “simple, sexy and romantic at the same time,” according to Mark Bridges, costume designer for the silent film “The Artist.”

To try out this fun and festive fashion on yourself, check out these beaded and fringed looks. To avoid looking too costume-y, try adding a jean jacket or pair of jeggings under a flapper dress to bring your look into the modern age. Have fun with it!
