The Macarena Diaries: #1January 18, 2012 by Stan | Celebrity Fashion
A look back at all things 90’s: Both good and rad.
From paprika to cumin, there aren’t numerous spices that really make a large impact on a society. But in the late 1990’s, people everywhere were spicing up their lives with a little British flair.
Not since Beatle-mania, Americans were embracing the latest export from across the pond with open arms. Perhaps it was a fun escape from a decade of change and turmoil, or perhaps it was a middle finger to the grunge movement, but nothing paved the road for the return of pop music like the Spice Girls.
It was one of the first CD’s I had to run out and get. I was waiting outside of Tower Records (anyone?) and I must have been about 10 or 11, eagerly anticipating the sheer brilliance of the fabulous five-some. Did I identify with Victoria Beckham and her ’97 Gucci Mini dress? Maybe. Did I drag my family to see “Spice World” about 100 times? Absolutely.
The Spice Girls served up a heaping platter of girl power, and paved the way for the entitled empowerment the female stars of today receive. With glittery accessories, platform sneakers and a union jack dress, these London ladies were a part of the 90’s I will never forget. I pine for the day when I have to explain to my children what a “Wannabe” was.
