How do you achieve perfect 1920s make up? When it comes to recreating the signature look of a Great Gatsby era flapper, the iconic cupid's bow lip is an art deco detail that must be mastered. Feminine and whimsical, this heart-shaped lip typifies the flapper's spitfire attitude and fearless fashion sense. Want to learn how to create this classic look for yourself? Continue below!
To create this classic 1920s look, we went to vintage beauty experts Tia Semer and Glamour Daze for a simple step by step tutorial. Whether you want to put the finishing touches on your glitzy Gatsby girl ensemble or just want to jazz up your style with some prohibition-era glam, check out the video and steps below.
Step 1: Prep lips with a balm
Step 2: Blend concealer onto your lips
Step 3: Create the bow shape by lining your upper lip staying within it's natural borders. End the line before the corner of your lip for a more narrow appearance.
Step 4: Slightly enhance the center edge of your lower lip. Corners of the lower lip should flare inward, short of the natural edge of your lip.
Step 5: Fill in with your lip liner. Your lip color will last longer this way.
Step 6: Go over your lip liner with a 1920s shade of lipstick. Popular colors were deep reds, plums - even orange and rose tones. Tia used the Theda shade from her own make-up line, Eliza Cosmetics.
Step 7: Finished lips!
Now that your lips are done up to Clara Bow perfection, be sure to shimmy on by our flapper section for the art deco ensemble to complete your look!
