Dainty Dominatrix

One of my favorite runway shows of Fall 2011 Ready to Wear was exhibited by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton.  Inspired by the 1974 art-house film "The Night Porter" as well as a conversation Mr. Jacobs had with LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault about the obsession women have over their handbags, the collection was an interesting juxtaposition of militant and feminine.  Looks like the ones shown are a great option for those of us who like to retain our edge and our femininity.

Frilly dresses with wrist-length leather gloves and chunky booties, military hats with masquerade embellishments, frothy evening gowns with tough-looking corsets over the bust and thick wool outerwear were the standout looks of this collection.  Any woman wearing these clothes knows what she wants and isn't afraid to ask for it.
The "dainty dominatrix" look (as I like to refer to it) is easily attainable, even if your credit card gives you the stink-eye for even thinking about going into Louis Vuitton.  A few new additions to your fall wardrobe from the right source and voila!  You look like you've been styled by Marc himself.  In fact, I found all of the items below right here on Unique Vintage!
STEP 1: ASSEMBLE YOUR FRAME
Just like a house (okay well not really JUST like a house but bear with me here), an entire outfit can come crashing down into disaster-ville without a solid and properly constructed frame.  The dress and the shoe are the most important components of any ensemble, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.  To achieve the LV look via UV, go for either a body-conscious dress or a corset-top with a frilly skirt like the ones shown here.  Select your shoe in a sexy high-heeled style that contrasts the dress (for example, the girly corset dress would need a tough boot to balance out the look and add layers to the look).
STEP 2: ADD EMBELLISHMENTS
Put together your accessories based on the dress and shoe you've already established.  A sleek dress with a feminine high heeled Mary-Jane would need some more accessories to remind us the wearer is tough: a military-inspired police hat with a beaded mask attached over the front, or seamed stockings.  And maybe some brushed metal jewelry and a boxy purse.  If your look is super-girly already, go with some leather-wrist gloves and a small bejeweled tote.
STEP 3: PROTECT YOUR CONSTRUCTION

With the "dainty dominatrix" another layer is just another opportunity to add to the look.  I can't tell you how many times I've been disappointed in what passes for outerwear, but luckily Unique Vintage has an enormous selection of coats and jackets that are both femme and dom.  Remember when choosing the final piece of your ensemble, the favorite word of the "dainty dominatrix": juxtapose!  The jacket should be a stark contrast to your dress, but go well with the rest of your accessories.  That way, when you remove the jacket it will be a truly show-stopping moment (as if it wasn't already).
